This spinning toy, which doubles as a pencil holder, is inspired by the 700-year-old dance practiced by Sufi dervishes. Spinning serenely, dervishes enter a spiritual trance when practicing this ancient ritual. “Sama” is named after the meditation ceremony during this mystical dance is performed.
This unique piece was produced in Tripoli for the Play by Minjara Collection, a range of wooden playful objects infused with a sense of Lebanese culture. Play by Minjara emerged from a partnership between Minjara and the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA) Design Department at the University of Balamand.
